What the Color of Your Urine Can Tell You About Your Health

Urine color can provide clues, especially about hydration, but color alone cannot diagnose a disease. Certain foods, vitamins, medications, and medical conditions can change urine color.

  • 🟨 Pale yellow: Usually consistent with good hydration.

  • 🟡 Dark yellow/amber: Often means your urine is concentrated, commonly from not drinking enough fluids.

  • 💧 Very clear: Often reflects high fluid intake. Persistently excessive thirst and very clear urine may warrant medical evaluation.

  • 🟠 Orange: Can occur with dehydration or certain medications. If it persists without an obvious explanation, get it checked.

  • 🩷 Pink/red: Can result from foods such as beetroot, but it can also indicate blood in the urine. Unexplained red or pink urine should be medically evaluated.

  • 🟤 Dark brown: Can occur with severe dehydration or certain medications and medical conditions, including problems involving the liver or muscles. Seek medical advice if unexplained.

  • 🟢/🔵 Green or blue: Uncommon; some medications, dyes, or infections can cause unusual colors.

  • ☁️ Cloudy: May occur with concentrated urine, crystals, or an infection, particularly when accompanied by burning, urgency, fever, or pain.

When to pay attention

Don’t rely on urine color alone. Blood in the urine, persistent dark/brown urine, fever, painful urination, severe back/side pain, or a major unexplained change in urine deserves medical assessment.

Also, there’s no need to force large amounts of water simply to make your urine completely clear. Pale yellow is generally a reasonable target for many healthy adults.
