Who is most at risk of nocturnal cramps?

If you mean nighttime leg cramps (nocturnal leg cramps), they’re especially common in:

  • Older adults, particularly people over 60.

  • People who are physically active or overuse their muscles, including prolonged standing or walking.

  • People who are pregnant, especially later in pregnancy.

  • People who are dehydrated or have significant fluid/electrolyte losses.

  • People taking certain medicines, including some diuretics and other drugs that can affect muscles or electrolytes.

  • People with certain medical conditions, including peripheral artery disease, nerve disorders, kidney disease, or liver disease.

Often, however, the exact cause isn’t identifiable.

If cramps are new, severe, happening frequently, or accompanied by swelling, weakness, numbness, or changes in skin color, it’s worth discussing them with a healthcare professional.
