These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease

Liver disease can develop quietly, and some people have few or no symptoms until the condition becomes advanced. However, certain visible changes in the skin, eyes, abdomen, or legs can sometimes signal a liver problem.

8 visible signs to watch for

  1. Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
A yellowish color can occur when bilirubin builds up in the blood and may be associated with liver or bile-duct problems.

  2. Swollen abdomen
Fluid accumulation in the abdomen, known as ascites, can occur with advanced liver disease.

  3. Swollen legs or ankles
Fluid retention can cause noticeable swelling, particularly in the lower legs.

  4. Easy bruising
Liver disease can affect blood-clotting proteins, potentially making bruises appear more easily.

  5. Spider-like blood vessels
Small, branching red blood vessels called spider angiomas may appear on the skin and can be associated with chronic liver disease.

  6. Red palms
Palmar erythema, or unusually red palms, can occur in people with certain liver conditions.

  7. Itchy skin or scratch marks
Persistent itching can occur with some liver and bile-flow disorders and may leave visible marks from scratching.

  8. Changes in muscle and body appearance
Advanced liver disease can cause significant muscle loss and unintended weight changes.

Don’t rely on appearance alone

These signs do not automatically mean you have liver disease. Many have other possible causes, and some people with liver disease have no visible symptoms at all.

If you notice yellow eyes or skin, unexplained abdominal swelling, persistent itching, unusual bruising, or significant unexplained weight loss, it’s worth speaking with a healthcare professional. Blood tests and, when appropriate, imaging can help determine what’s causing the changes.

If jaundice develops suddenly, or you have severe abdominal swelling, vomiting blood, black stools, confusion, or extreme drowsiness, seek urgent medical care.
