5 Foods That Can Help Relieve Constipation Naturally
There isn’t an official ranking of the “most laxative foods,” but some foods are particularly useful because they provide fiber, water, or naturally occurring compounds that can soften stool and encourage bowel movements.
- Prunes (dried plums) 🍑
Prunes contain fiber and sorbitol, a naturally occurring sugar alcohol that draws water into the bowel. Start with a small serving, such as 4–6 prunes, because larger amounts may cause gas or diarrhea. - Kiwifruit 🥝
Kiwi provides fiber and water and may improve stool frequency and consistency in people with constipation. - Pears 🍐
Pears contain fiber and sorbitol. Eating the skin when well washed provides additional fiber. - Chia seeds 🌱
Chia is rich in fiber and absorbs water, helping increase stool bulk. Mix 1–2 tablespoons into yogurt, oatmeal, or a drink with plenty of fluid. - Oatmeal and other high-fiber whole grains 🌾
Their soluble and insoluble fiber can help promote regular bowel movements. Increase fiber gradually to reduce bloating.
A simple rule
When increasing fiber, increase fluids too. Suddenly eating a large amount of fiber without enough liquid can actually make constipation worse.
If constipation is persistent, severe, accompanied by blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, significant abdominal pain, or inability to pass gas, seek medical attention rather than relying on food remedies alone.
