These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

If you’re referring to a health article or social-media headline, the key point is that liver disease can sometimes be present before obvious symptoms appear. When signs do occur, some can be easy to overlook.

Possible visible signs of liver disease

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice) — caused by increased bilirubin.
  • Swelling of the abdomen or legs — can occur with advanced liver disease.
  • Easy bruising or unusual bleeding — the liver makes proteins needed for blood clotting.
  • Spider-like blood vessels on the skin — sometimes seen with chronic liver disease.
  • Red palms (palmar erythema) — can occur in some chronic liver conditions.
  • Itchy skin — may accompany certain liver and bile-duct disorders.
  • Dark urine or unusually pale stools — can indicate problems with bile processing or flow.

Importantly, these signs don’t automatically mean someone has liver disease. Many have other possible causes.

If someone develops new jaundice, significant abdominal swelling, confusion, vomiting blood, or black/tarry stools, they should seek medical attention promptly.
