5 Critical Health Signals of a Mini Stroke in Seniors That Shouldn’t Be Ignored

A “mini-stroke” usually refers to a

transient ischemic attack (TIA). The symptoms can disappear within minutes or hours, but a TIA is a medical emergency because

it can precede a major stroke.

5 critical warning signs in seniors

  1. Sudden facial drooping — especially on one side. Ask the person to smile and check whether one side of the face droops.
  2. Sudden weakness or numbness — particularly in an arm or leg on one side of the body.
  3. Sudden trouble speaking or understanding — slurred speech, difficulty finding words, or confusion.
  4. Sudden vision problems — blurred, double, or lost vision in one or both eyes.
  5. Sudden severe dizziness or loss of balance — especially when it occurs unexpectedly or alongside other neurological symptoms.

What to do

Use FAST: Face, Arm, Speech, Time. If any of these symptoms appear suddenly, call your local emergency medical service immediately, even if the symptoms disappear. Don’t wait to see whether they return.

A TIA cannot safely be diagnosed at home, and prompt medical assessment can help prevent a subsequent major stroke.
