Your Nails May Be Telling You Something: 3 Signs to Watch For

Changes in your nails are often harmless, but persistent or sudden changes can sometimes provide clues about your health. Three signs worth paying attention to are:

  1. A new dark or brown streak on one nail
Most dark nail streaks have benign causes, but a new or changing dark band—especially one that becomes wider, has irregular coloring, or extends onto the surrounding skin—should be examined by a dermatologist to rule out nail melanoma.
  2. Nails that become spoon-shaped
Nails that curve upward at the edges and form a depression in the center (koilonychia) can sometimes be associated with iron deficiency, although there are other possible causes.
  3. Nails that become yellow, thick, or crumbly
This is commonly caused by a fungal nail infection, but other conditions—including psoriasis and certain medical disorders—can produce similar changes.

When to get checked

Don’t rely on nail appearance alone to diagnose a disease. If a nail change is new, persistent, painful, rapidly worsening, or affecting only one nail, it’s worth having a healthcare professional examine it.

And if you notice a new dark streak that is changing, don’t ignore it—early evaluation is particularly important.
