8 Medicines That Can Affect Your Kidneys
The claim that there are “eight pills you should never take” is too broad. Many medicines can affect kidney function under certain circumstances, yet are safe and beneficial when appropriately prescribed. The risk is higher with kidney disease, dehydration, high doses, prolonged use, or combinations of medicines.
Eight important examples/groups are:
- Ibuprofen — an NSAID that can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, particularly with high or prolonged use.
- Naproxen — another NSAID with similar kidney risks.
- Diclofenac — an NSAID that can also affect kidney function.
- High-dose aspirin — higher doses can have NSAID-like effects on the kidneys; this is different from low-dose aspirin prescribed for cardiovascular protection.
- Some diuretics (“water pills”) — excessive fluid loss can contribute to dehydration and kidney problems.
