Why seniors should wear socks even at home

🧦 Why Seniors May Benefit From Wearing Socks at Home

Wearing socks at home isn’t something every older adult must do, but it can provide several practical benefits—especially for people who get cold easily or have reduced sensation in their feet.

  • Keep feet warm: Older adults can be more sensitive to cold, and warm socks can improve comfort.
  • Protect the skin: Socks can reduce friction and minor injuries from footwear or rough surfaces.
  • Reduce the risk of small foot injuries: This can be particularly important for people with diabetes or reduced sensation, because they may not notice a cut or blister.
  • Provide some protection from minor burns: Socks offer a small barrier against warm floors or accidental contact with objects.
  • Improve comfort at night: Warm feet may make it easier for some people to settle down for sleep.
  • Help with moisture: Moisture-wicking socks can help keep feet drier and reduce the environment that encourages fungal infections.

⚠️ Choose socks carefully

For older adults, fit matters more than simply wearing socks. Avoid socks that are so tight they leave deep marks or make the feet numb or uncomfortable. Choose breathable, nonrestrictive material and change damp socks promptly.

If someone has diabetes, poor circulation, neuropathy, or foot ulcers, daily foot inspection is especially important. Socks should never be used to hide a wound or unexplained skin change.

And there’s one important exception: loose socks can increase fall risk on smooth floors. If walking around the house, socks with nonslip grips or well-fitting footwear are safer than ordinary slippery socks.

Bottom line: Socks can keep an older person’s feet warm and protected, but comfortable, properly fitting, nonslip socks are the better choice—particularly at home.
