Who Is Most at Risk of Night Cramps?

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, painful muscle tightening that often affects the calves or feet while you’re sleeping. They can happen to anyone, but some people are more likely to experience them.

People at higher risk include:

1. Older adults
Night cramps become more common with age, partly because muscles and tendons can become less flexible.

2. People who are very active
Long periods of walking, standing, or exercise can sometimes contribute to muscle fatigue.

3. People who sit for long periods
Limited movement can contribute to muscle stiffness and discomfort.

4. Pregnant women
Leg cramps are common during pregnancy, particularly later in pregnancy.

5. People taking certain medicines
Some medications, including certain diuretics and cholesterol medicines, may be associated with muscle cramps.

6. People with certain health conditions
Problems affecting nerves, blood flow, muscles, or metabolism can sometimes contribute to cramps.
