Two foods cause cancer (shocking!)

If you’re fact-checking that viral claim, “two foods cause cancer” is far too absolute. Cancer risk depends on the food, amount, frequency, preparation, and overall diet.

Two food categories with particularly strong evidence are:

  • Processed meat — bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami, and similar products are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as carcinogenic to humans, based on evidence for colorectal cancer. This does not mean that eating one serving will cause cancer; risk increases with consumption.
  • Alcoholic beverages — alcohol is also classified as carcinogenic to humans, and it is associated with several cancers. The risk generally increases with the amount consumed; there is no established completely risk-free level for cancer prevention.

If you meant two specific foods from a viral post, send me the names and I can check whether the claim is actually supported by medical evidence.
