Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

🍌 Bananas Can Last Longer With One Simple Storage Change

If your bananas seem to go from green to brown overnight, the fruit bowl may not be the best place for them.

One simple alternative is to use a banana hanger or hook.

Why hang your bananas?

Hanging bananas keeps them off the countertop and away from pressure points. It also allows air to circulate around the fruit and can reduce bruising.

Bananas naturally produce ethylene gas, which promotes ripening. Keeping them separated from other ripe fruit can also help slow the process.

Try this when you get home

  1. Remove bananas from any tightly sealed plastic packaging.
  2. Hang the bunch from a sturdy banana hook or hanger.
  3. Keep them somewhere cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight.
  4. Keep them away from very ripe apples, pears, avocados, and other ethylene-producing fruit.
  5. Once they’re fully ripe, you can refrigerate them to slow further ripening. The peel may darken, but the flesh can remain good for longer.

🍌 What about wrapping the stems?

Wrapping the crown/stems with plastic wrap is another popular trick. It may modestly slow ripening, but don’t expect a guaranteed extra 10 days.

There isn’t a reliable rule that one kitchen item will make every bunch of bananas last exactly 10 days longer. Ripening depends on temperature, variety, maturity when purchased, and how the fruit is handled.

Don’t throw away brown bananas

Brown spots don’t automatically mean a banana is spoiled. If the fruit inside has a normal smell and isn’t moldy or unusually slimy, it can still be excellent for smoothies, oatmeal, pancakes, or banana bread.

Bottom line: A banana hanger is a useful way to reduce bruising and improve airflow, while keeping bananas away from heat and other ripe fruit can further slow ripening. 🍌
