8 Plants That May Help Repel Mice, Spiders & Other Insects

Certain strongly scented plants contain natural compounds that some insects and rodents dislike. However, plants alone usually won’t eliminate a pest infestation. Think of them as one part of a broader pest-control strategy.

1. Peppermint

Peppermint has a strong menthol scent that may discourage some insects. Growing it in containers near doors or windows can be a practical option because it spreads aggressively when planted directly in the ground.

2. Lavender

Lavender’s fragrance is pleasant to people but may discourage some insects. Place pots near sunny windows, entrances, or outdoor seating areas.

3. Basil

Basil contains aromatic oils that may help deter certain flying insects. Keep pots near sunny windows or kitchen entrances.

4. Rosemary

Rosemary’s strong fragrance may discourage some insects. It also grows well in warm, sunny conditions and can be used as a culinary herb.

5. Lemongrass

Lemongrass has a citrus-like aroma and contains citronella-related compounds. It can be grown outdoors in suitable climates and is particularly popular as a mosquito-deterring plant.

6. Marigolds

Marigolds contain aromatic compounds that may help discourage some garden pests. They can also add color to gardens and containers.

7. Catnip

Catnip contains nepetalactone, a compound that has demonstrated insect-repellent properties. Keep in mind that it can attract cats, so it may not be ideal for every household.

8. Mint

Mint’s strong aroma may discourage certain insects. Like peppermint, however, it can spread rapidly, so growing it in a container is often easier to manage.

What About Mice and Spiders?

It’s important not to overstate what these plants can do. There is limited evidence that simply growing a plant indoors will reliably drive mice or spiders away. For mice, the most effective approach is to seal gaps and entry points, remove accessible food, and keep garbage securely contained.

For spiders and insects, reducing clutter, repairing screens, sealing cracks, and eliminating standing water can be more effective than relying on plants alone.

A simple approach

Use aromatic plants around entrances and outdoor living areas, while also focusing on cleanliness, exclusion, and removing food or water sources. If you have a significant infestation, professional pest-control advice may be more effective than adding more plants.
