6 Vitamins to Unclog Your Arteries

There aren’t vitamins that can literally “unclog” blocked arteries. Atherosclerosis involves plaque buildup, and established plaque generally can’t be removed simply by taking supplements.

If you’re creating health content, a more accurate headline would be:

6 Vitamins & Nutrients That Support Heart and Artery Health

  1. Vitamin B12 — Helps maintain normal blood cells and nerves. Correcting a B12 deficiency can lower elevated homocysteine, although B12 supplements haven’t been shown to clear arterial plaque.
  2. Folate (Vitamin B9) — Important for homocysteine metabolism and normal blood-cell production. It’s best obtained through foods such as leafy greens, beans, and fortified grains unless supplementation is needed.
  3. Vitamin B6 — Works with folate and B12 in homocysteine metabolism. A balanced diet usually provides enough.
  4. Vitamin D — Important for overall health, but vitamin D supplements have not been shown to unclog arteries or prevent cardiovascular disease in people who aren’t deficient.
  5. Vitamin C — An antioxidant involved in collagen production and blood-vessel health. Getting it from fruits and vegetables is preferable to assuming high-dose supplements will reverse plaque.
  6. Vitamin E — Has antioxidant properties, but vitamin E supplements have not been proven to remove arterial plaque or prevent heart attacks and can carry risks at high doses.

What actually helps reduce artery disease?

The strongest evidence is for not smoking, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, managing diabetes, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and following a heart-healthy diet. When appropriate, medications such as statins can substantially reduce cardiovascular risk.

If someone has symptoms suggesting a heart attack—chest pressure/pain, shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back—seek emergency medical care rather than trying supplements.
