5 Foods Rich in Estrogen 🌱
A small clarification: plants don’t contain human estrogen. Some foods contain phytoestrogens—plant compounds that can weakly interact with estrogen receptors. They aren’t equivalent to taking estrogen medication.
Five good dietary sources include:
-
Soy foods — tofu, tempeh, edamame, and soy milk are among the richest sources of isoflavones.
-
Flaxseeds — particularly rich in lignans, a type of phytoestrogen.
-
Sesame seeds — contain lignans and other plant compounds with estrogen-like activity.
-
Chickpeas — provide smaller amounts of phytoestrogens along with protein and fiber.
-
Lentils — contain phytoestrogens and are a nutritious source of plant protein and fiber.
Important to know
Eating these foods doesn’t necessarily raise your estrogen to a specific level. Their effects are much weaker and more complex than prescription estrogen, and research suggests they may have different effects depending on a person’s hormonal status.
For most people, these foods can be part of a healthy diet. If you’re considering them specifically to treat menopause symptoms, infertility, low estrogen, or another hormonal condition, it’s better to discuss your goal with a healthcare professional rather than trying to manipulate hormones through food alone.
