5 colors to avoid after 50: they can dull your glow

5 Colors to “Avoid” After 50? Not Necessarily

There are no colors you medically or objectively need to avoid after 50. The idea that certain colors automatically make older adults look dull is largely a matter of styling preference, lighting, skin undertone, and personal taste.

That said, if your goal is to make your complexion look brighter, these colors are sometimes less flattering for some people:

  1. Very dull beige — can blend into the skin and reduce contrast.
  2. Muddy olive or yellow-green — may make some complexions appear sallow.
  3. Dusty gray — can look flat when worn close to the face.
  4. Very pale yellow — may reduce contrast against lighter or warm skin tones.
  5. Dark brown — can sometimes create a heavy appearance, especially without contrasting accessories.

The better rule

Instead of avoiding colors because you’re over 50, choose shades that complement your skin undertone and create enough contrast around your face. A scarf, necklace, jacket, or brighter neckline can also change how a color looks.

And if you love beige, gray, olive, or brown—wear them! Style isn’t determined by age.
