3 Exercises to Relieve Sciatica Leg Pain
Sciatica can cause pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness. Gentle movement can help some people, but there isn’t one exercise that’s right for every cause of sciatica.
1. Gentle walking 🚶
Start with 5–10 minutes of comfortable walking, several times a day if tolerated. Gradually increase the duration. Avoid pushing through severe or worsening leg pain.
2. Gentle hamstring stretch
- Lie on your back with one knee bent.
- Raise the other leg slowly while keeping the knee slightly bent.
- Hold a gentle stretch for 15–30 seconds.
- Repeat 2–3 times on each side.
You should feel a mild stretch—not sharp or shooting pain.
3. Gentle lumbar extension
For some people whose symptoms improve with extension:
- Lie on your stomach.
- Prop yourself gently on your elbows for several seconds.
- If comfortable, gradually straighten your arms and raise your chest while keeping your hips relaxed.
- Repeat 5–10 times without forcing the movement.
Stop if it makes the pain travel farther down the leg or significantly worsens your symptoms. A physiotherapist can determine whether extension or flexion-based exercises are better for your particular condition.
🚨 When exercise isn’t enough
Seek urgent medical attention if sciatica is accompanied by new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals/inner thighs (“saddle” numbness), or rapidly worsening weakness in the legs. These can indicate serious nerve compression.
If pain is persistent, severe, or repeatedly returning, getting assessed by a doctor or physiotherapist is preferable to relying on exercises alone.
Important: Don’t force stretches or perform aggressive “nerve flossing” exercises during an acute flare. Gentle, symptom-guided movement is generally safer.
