23 Signs Your Kidneys Might Be in Trouble

Kidney disease can be difficult to recognize because early chronic kidney disease often causes few or no symptoms. Many symptoms on lists like this are nonspecific and can have other causes, so they don’t by themselves prove that the kidneys are failing. Blood and urine tests are often needed to identify kidney problems.

Possible warning signs include:

  1. Swelling in the ankles, feet, legs, or around the eyes

  2. Foamy or unusually bubbly urine

  3. Blood in the urine

  4. Urinating more often, particularly at night

  5. Producing much less urine than usual

  6. Changes in urine appearance or color

  7. Persistent fatigue or low energy

  8. Difficulty concentrating or unusual drowsiness

  9. Poor appetite

  10. Nausea or vomiting

  11. Unexplained weight loss

  12. Dry, itchy skin

  13. Muscle cramps

  14. Muscle weakness

  15. Headaches

  16. Sleep problems

  17. Shortness of breath

  18. High blood pressure that’s difficult to control

  19. Puffiness around the eyes

  20. A metallic taste or unpleasant taste in the mouth

  21. Persistent bad breath

  22. Feeling unusually cold

  23. Pain in the side or lower back — this can occur with some kidney conditions, although many causes of back pain have nothing to do with the kidneys.
