10 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot in the Leg You Should Know

A blood clot in a deep vein of the leg is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It can become dangerous if part of the clot travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. Some DVTs cause few or no symptoms, but possible warning signs include:

  1. Swelling in one leg — Often affecting the calf, ankle, or entire leg.
  2. Pain or tenderness — Frequently felt in the calf and may worsen when standing or walking.
  3. Warmth — The affected area may feel warmer than the other leg.
  4. Red or discolored skin — The skin can become reddish, bluish, or darker than usual.
  5. A feeling of heaviness — The affected leg may feel unusually heavy or tight.
  6. Tight or stretched skin — Swelling can make the skin feel unusually tense.
  7. Enlarged or prominent veins — Veins near the surface may become more noticeable.
  8. Pain that develops without an obvious injury — Unexplained leg discomfort deserves attention, particularly with swelling.
  9. Tenderness along a vein — The area may be painful when touched.
  10. Symptoms affecting mainly one side — Unexplained swelling, warmth, and pain occurring together in one leg are particularly concerning.

🚨 Know the emergency signs

A DVT can lead to a pulmonary embolism. Get emergency medical help immediately if you develop sudden shortness of breath, chest pain (especially with breathing), coughing up blood, fainting, or a rapid heartbeat.

These symptoms can have other causes, so they don’t prove that you have a blood clot. If you develop unexplained one-sided leg swelling or pain, seek prompt medical evaluation rather than trying to diagnose it yourself.
