If by “flat stomach” you mean less bloating and abdominal distension, there isn’t a universal list of foods everyone needs to avoid. A flatter abdomen also depends on body fat, digestion, constipation, hormones, and genetics.
That said, these foods can cause temporary bloating in some people:
-
Carbonated drinks — add gas to the digestive tract.
-
Large amounts of beans and lentils — can produce gas, especially if you’re not accustomed to them.
-
Onions and garlic — high in certain fermentable carbohydrates that can trigger bloating in sensitive people.
-
Large portions of wheat-based foods — may cause symptoms in people sensitive to wheat or certain fermentable carbohydrates.
-
Milk and ice cream — can cause bloating if you’re lactose intolerant.
-
Sugar alcohols such as sorbitol and xylitol — commonly cause gas or diarrhea when consumed in larger amounts.
-
Very salty processed foods — can temporarily increase water retention.
-
Large amounts of cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli — nutritious, but can increase gas in some people.
-
Very fatty or fried meals — can slow stomach emptying and make you feel uncomfortably full.
-
Very large meals — even healthy foods can cause abdominal distension when eaten in large quantities
