10 Early Warning Signs of a Stroke Everyone Should Know

A stroke can happen suddenly, and fast action can save brain tissue and potentially prevent disability. If these symptoms appear, don’t wait for them to improve.

Sudden numbness or weakness — especially in the face, arm, or leg, particularly on one side.
Facial drooping — one side of the face may droop or feel numb, especially when smiling.
Sudden speech problems — slurred speech, difficulty speaking, or saying inappropriate words.
Difficulty understanding speech — suddenly being unable to understand what others are saying.
Sudden vision problems — blurred, double, or lost vision in one or both eyes.
Sudden dizziness or loss of balance — trouble walking, coordinating movements, or staying upright.
A sudden severe headache — particularly a headache that comes on abruptly and has no known cause.
Sudden confusion — an abrupt change in awareness, thinking, or ability to respond normally.
Sudden difficulty swallowing — especially when it occurs together with other neurological symptoms.
Sudden loss of coordination — unexpected clumsiness or inability to control an arm or leg.
Remember BE FAST
B — Balance: Sudden loss of balance or coordination.
E — Eyes: Sudden vision changes.
F — Face: Is one side of the face drooping?
A — Arms: Is one arm weak or numb?
S — Speech: Is speech slurred or difficult to understand?
T — Time: Call emergency services immediately.
🚨 Don’t wait—even if symptoms disappear

Symptoms that disappear can be a transient ischemic attack (TIA) and still require urgent medical assessment. If possible, note the exact time symptoms started or the last time the person was known to be normal.

If someone is experiencing possible stroke symptoms right now, call your local emergency service rather than driving them yourself.
