10 Early Signs of Dementia You Should Never Ignore
Dementia can develop gradually, and early symptoms may be easy to dismiss as ordinary aging. However, one symptom alone does not mean someone has dementia. Persistent or worsening changes deserve medical evaluation because some causes of memory and thinking problems are treatable.
-
Frequently forgetting recent information
Repeatedly forgetting conversations, appointments, or recently learned information. -
Repeating questions or stories
Asking the same question several times because the person doesn’t remember having asked it. -
Difficulty doing familiar tasks
Struggling with activities that were previously routine, such as cooking a familiar meal, handling money, or using household appliances. -
Problems finding words
Frequently losing track of conversations or having unusual difficulty finding familiar words. -
Becoming confused about time or place
Getting lost in familiar locations or becoming unsure about the date, season, or where they are. -
Misplacing things unusually often
Putting objects in inappropriate places and being unable to retrace their steps to find them. -
Poorer judgment
Making unusual financial decisions, falling for scams, or neglecting personal safety. -
Difficulty planning or solving problems
Struggling with bills, schedules, recipes, or tasks that require several steps. -
Withdrawal from normal activities
Losing interest in hobbies, social activities, or work that the person previously enjoyed. -
Noticeable changes in personality or behavior
New or persistent apathy, irritability, anxiety, suspiciousness, or other significant behavioral changes.
Important: not every memory problem is dementia
Memory and concentration can also be affected by medications, depression, poor sleep, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disorders, infections, stress, and other medical conditions. A doctor can evaluate these possibilities.
If confusion develops suddenly over hours or days, seek medical attention promptly rather than assuming it is dementia. Sudden confusion can have an urgent medical cause.
