Why Seniors May Benefit From Wearing Socks at Home
Wearing socks can be useful for some older adults, but “every senior must wear socks at home” is too broad. The main benefits are warmth and foot protection—not a special effect on circulation.
1. 🥶 Keeping feet warm
Older adults can be more vulnerable to cold temperatures. The National Institute on Aging recommends socks and warm footwear for older adults in a cool home.
2. 🦶 Protecting the feet
Socks can provide a layer of protection against minor irritation, especially for people with diabetes or reduced sensation in their feet. CDC guidance recommends well-fitting shoes and socks for people with diabetes and advises against going barefoot, even indoors.
3. ⚠️ But socks alone can increase fall risk
This is the important part that viral posts often miss: walking on smooth floors in socks can be slippery. The NIA specifically advises older adults not to walk on floors or stairs in socks or smooth-soled slippers.
For someone with balance problems, well-fitting, nonslip footwear is generally safer than ordinary socks alone.
A safer approach
- Choose clean, comfortable, breathable socks that aren’t excessively tight.
- Change damp socks promptly.
- If your feet are cold, use socks plus safe, nonslip footwear.
- Check your feet regularly if you have diabetes or reduced sensation.
