Which Way Should Toilet Paper Hang?
The classic answer is “over” — with the loose end hanging in front of the roll, toward you.
There are a few practical reasons:
- 🧻 Easier to grab and tear without reaching behind the roll.
- 🧼 Less contact with the wall when pulling off sheets.
- 👀 Easier to see the loose edge, especially in low light.
- 🧹 Generally more convenient for cleaning and changing the roll.
Interestingly, the original 1891 patent for a perforated toilet-paper roll by Seth Wheeler illustrates the paper coming over the top of the roll.
That said, there’s no health rule requiring one direction. “Over” is mostly a matter of convenience and preference. If your household prefers “under,” you’re not doing it wrong.
