What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health?

Your urine color can sometimes give you a clue about hydration, but color alone cannot diagnose a health problem. Food, vitamins, and medications can also change its appearance.

🟑 Pale Yellow

Usually a normal color and often suggests you’re reasonably hydrated.

πŸ’§ Almost Clear

Very light or clear urine can happen when you’ve been drinking plenty of fluids. You don’t need to force yourself to drink excessive amounts of water.

🟠 Dark Yellow or Orange

Darker urine can occur when you’re dehydrated. Orange urine can also result from certain medicines or vitamins and, sometimes, liver or bile-duct problems.

πŸ”΄ Pink or Red

This can sometimes come from foods such as beets, but it can also indicate blood in the urine. Blood should be medically evaluated, even if it happens only once.

🟀 Dark Brown or Cola-Colored

This can be caused by dehydration, certain foods or medicines, but it may also occur with liver, kidney, urinary, or muscle-related problems. Persistent dark-brown urine should be checked.

☁️ Cloudy or Milky

Cloudy urine can sometimes occur with a urinary tract infection or kidney stones, especially when accompanied by pain, burning, or frequent urination.

🟒 Green or πŸ”΅ Blue

These unusual colors can sometimes be caused by food dyes, medications, or medical dyes used during testing. Rarely, infections or other conditions can cause unusual colors.

When Should You Get Checked?

Don’t ignore red or brown urine, especially when the change can’t be explained by food or medication. Seek medical advice if you also have pain, burning when urinating, fever, unusual swelling, or persistent changes in urine.

Bottom line: Pale-yellow urine is generally a good sign of hydration, but urine color is only one clue. Persistent or unexplained changes deserve medical attention.
