The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Your Throat—and What Can Help
Constantly feeling mucus stuck in your throat can be frustrating. You may find yourself repeatedly swallowing, coughing, or clearing your throat.
The good news is that persistent throat mucus is often caused by a treatable problem, and it doesn’t automatically mean you have a serious illness.
1. Postnasal Drip
One of the most common causes is postnasal drip, when excess mucus from the nose or sinuses drains down the back of the throat.
Allergies, colds, sinus irritation, changes in weather, and some medications can contribute to it.
What may help: Treating the underlying nasal problem, using saline nasal spray or rinse, staying hydrated, and reducing exposure to known allergens or irritants.
2. Acid Reflux
Reflux doesn’t always cause obvious heartburn. When stomach contents reach the throat, it can cause throat clearing, coughing, hoarseness, a lump-like sensation, and increased mucus or phlegm.
If symptoms are worse after meals or when lying down, reflux may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
3. Allergies
Pollen, dust mites, mold, and animal dander can trigger inflammation and increased mucus production.
Sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, congestion, and seasonal symptoms make allergies more likely.
4. Smoking and Other Irritants
Tobacco smoke, vaping, air pollution, dust, and chemical fumes can irritate the airways and increase mucus production.
Reducing exposure can make a significant difference.
5. Asthma or Other Respiratory Conditions
Asthma can sometimes present mainly as a cough, while conditions such as chronic bronchitis or COPD can cause ongoing phlegm.
If you also have wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or a persistent cough, get evaluated rather than treating the mucus alone.
What Can You Do at Home?
💧 Stay hydrated. Fluids can help keep mucus thinner.
🌊 Try saline nasal spray or a properly prepared saline rinse if nasal congestion or postnasal drip is involved.
🌬️ Use a clean cool-mist humidifier if the air is very dry.
🚭 Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
🍽️ If reflux seems likely, discuss dietary and lifestyle changes with your healthcare professional.
😮💨 Avoid repeatedly forcefully clearing your throat, which can further irritate the tissues and create a cycle of throat clearing.
