The 6 foods that cause abdominal fat (visceral fat) that you should avoid

6 Foods That Can Contribute to Abdominal (Visceral) Fat

There isn’t a single food that automatically “causes” visceral fat, and completely banning six foods isn’t necessary. Visceral fat tends to increase when you consistently consume more energy than your body needs, particularly with diets high in refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and ultra-processed foods.

Foods worth limiting include:

  1. 🥤 Sugary drinks — soda, sweetened juices, energy drinks, and sweet teas can add lots of calories without making you feel very full.
  2. 🍩 Cakes, pastries, and doughnuts — often combine refined flour, added sugar, and substantial amounts of fat.
  3. 🍟 Fried fast food — frequent consumption can make it easy to consume excess calories and saturated fat.
  4. 🍞 Refined carbohydrates — large amounts of white bread, refined cereals, and similar foods can contribute to excessive calorie intake.
  5. 🍬 Sweets and candy — concentrated sources of added sugar and calories.
  6. 🥓 Highly processed meats — foods such as sausages, bacon, and some deli meats are best eaten less frequently as part of an overall heart-healthy diet.

What to eat instead

Build meals around vegetables, fruit, beans and lentils, whole grains, nuts, fish or other lean proteins, and minimally processed foods. Portion sizes still matter.

The important point about visceral fat

You can’t selectively burn belly fat by eliminating one particular food. Losing overall body fat through a sustainable calorie deficit, regular physical activity, and resistance training can reduce visceral fat.

If you’re concerned about abdominal fat, waist circumference and overall metabolic health are more useful indicators than simply judging how your stomach looks.
