Teriyaki Chicken Recipe

Easy Teriyaki Chicken

Tender chicken coated in a glossy, sweet-and-savory homemade teriyaki sauce. Ready in about 30 minutes.

Ingredients

For the chicken

  • 1½ lb (680 g) boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts

  • 1 tbsp cooking oil

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the teriyaki sauce

  • ½ cup soy sauce

  • ¼ cup honey or brown sugar

  • ¼ cup water

  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

  • 2 tbsp cold water

For serving

  • Cooked white or brown rice

  • Sliced green onions

  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce: Whisk together soy sauce, honey, ¼ cup water, rice vinegar, ginger, and garlic.

  2. Prepare the chicken: Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces and season lightly with salt and pepper.

  3. Cook: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook for about 6–8 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through.

  4. Add sauce: Pour the teriyaki mixture into the skillet. Bring it to a gentle simmer.

  5. Thicken: Mix cornstarch with 2 tbsp cold water. Stir it into the skillet and cook for 1–2 minutes, until the sauce becomes glossy and thick.

  6. Serve: Spoon the chicken and sauce over rice. Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.

Tip: Chicken thighs stay especially juicy, while chicken breast works well if you prefer a leaner option. Add steamed broccoli, carrots, or bell peppers for a complete meal.
