The headline “Sprinkle 1 spoon on dead orchid roots! Suddenly revived and blooms all year round” is misleading. There is no scientifically established powder that can revive truly dead orchid roots or guarantee year-round flowering.
🌱 If your orchid has rotten or dead roots
For a typical Phalaenopsis orchid, the safest approach is:
- Remove the orchid from its pot and gently remove the old growing medium.
- Look at the roots. Healthy roots are generally firm; rotten roots are often brown/black, mushy, or hollow.
- With sterilized scissors, remove genuinely dead or rotten roots.
- Repot in a suitable airy orchid medium, such as bark-based mix or appropriate long-fiber sphagnum. Orchid roots need good oxygen around them.
- Keep the plant in bright, indirect light and provide appropriate humidity.
- Water appropriately, allowing excess water to drain. Don’t allow water to sit in the crown (where the leaves meet), because this can cause rot.
- Don’t fertilize a severely rootless orchid immediately. Extension guidance recommends waiting until new roots are developing before fertilizing.
⚠️ What about the famous “one spoon of cinnamon”?
This is where many viral orchid videos go wrong.
Cinnamon does have antimicrobial properties, and some orchid growers use a tiny amount on a freshly cut wound. But putting a spoonful of cinnamon throughout the root system is not a good idea. Cinnamon is drying/desiccating and can damage living orchid root tissue. Orchid-care specialists recommend using it sparingly rather than coating healthy roots or potting medium.

No treatment can guarantee that. An orchid recovering from severe root loss may need months to rebuild its root system, and flowering should come after the plant has recovered sufficiently. University of Maryland Extension notes that orchids can regrow roots after severe loss, but recovery may take a couple of months or more.
