Small White Spots on Arms and Legs You Need To Know

Small white or light-colored spots on the arms and legs can have several causes, and the appearance alone isn’t enough to diagnose them.

Vitiligo: Smooth, clearly lighter or completely white patches caused by loss of pigment. It can occur on the arms, hands, feet, legs, and elsewhere.

Tinea versicolor: A yeast-related skin condition that can produce lighter spots, often with fine scaling or mild itching. It is particularly common in warm, humid climates.

Sun-related pigment changes: Some people develop small pale spots that become more noticeable after tanning.
When to get them checked

See a dermatologist if the spots are new, spreading, multiplying, becoming completely white, or not improving after several weeks. A dermatologist can distinguish conditions such as vitiligo and fungal infection, sometimes using a Wood’s lamp.

Don’t assume every white spot is vitiligo—and avoid treating it with random creams until you know the cause.

If you describe what the spots look like (tiny dots vs. larger patches, smooth vs. scaly, itchy or not, and whether they’re spreading), I can help narrow down the possibilities.
