Signs that your partner has had intimate relations with another person.

Signs Your Partner May Be Unfaithful

There is no physical symptom, behavior, or “secret sign” that can prove your partner has had sex with someone else. Many things people associate with infidelity—changes in affection, grooming, phone habits, or sexual behavior—can have completely unrelated explanations.

Possible relationship-level changes that may warrant an honest conversation include:

Sudden secrecy around their phone or social media.
Unexplained changes in schedule or repeated inconsistencies in their explanations.
Emotional distance or a noticeable change in communication.
Unexpected changes in intimacy or sexual interest.
Unusual defensiveness when you ask ordinary questions.
A sudden change in appearance or grooming without an obvious reason.
Less availability or unexplained periods when they cannot be reached.
Unexplained expenses or changes in financial behavior.
Avoiding conversations about the relationship or future.
Repeated inconsistencies that make their account of events difficult to reconcile.

None of these proves infidelity. Avoid trying to “test” your partner through their body, smell, genitals, or sexual performance—those aren’t reliable ways to establish whether someone has had sex with another person.

If you’re concerned about sexual health

If you have reason to believe your partner may have had another sexual partner, consider discussing STI testing and safer sex rather than relying on symptoms. Many STIs can have no symptoms at all.

The most reliable way to address suspected infidelity is a calm, direct conversation based on specific observations rather than assumptions.
