Signs Your Heart May Need Attention
Some heart problems produce obvious symptoms, while others can be subtle. A single symptom doesn’t prove you have heart disease, but new, unexplained, or worsening symptoms deserve attention.
-
Chest pressure, squeezing, heaviness, or discomfort — especially if it lasts several minutes or keeps coming back.
-
Shortness of breath — during ordinary activity, at rest, or when lying down.
-
Discomfort spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen.
-
Unusual sweating, nausea, or lightheadedness, particularly alongside chest discomfort.
-
A new racing, pounding, or irregular heartbeat.
-
Fainting or nearly fainting, especially during physical activity.
-
Unusual fatigue or a noticeable decline in exercise tolerance.
-
Swelling in the ankles, legs, or abdomen, particularly with breathlessness or rapid weight gain.
-
Waking suddenly at night short of breath or needing several pillows to breathe comfortably.
-
Persistent dizziness or weakness, especially when occurring with other symptoms.
🚨 Don’t wait with possible heart-attack symptoms
Sudden chest pressure or pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw requires emergency medical attention.
Heart attacks don’t always cause classic crushing chest pain. Women, older adults, and people with diabetes may sometimes have less typical symptoms.
If symptoms are new but mild or recurring, arrange a medical evaluation rather than trying to determine the cause yourself.
