Signs of vitamin B12 deficiency are ignored

Absolutely. Vitamin B12 deficiency can develop gradually, so its symptoms are sometimes mistaken for stress, aging, poor sleep, or other conditions. Some neurological effects can become permanent if deficiency is prolonged.

10 often-overlooked signs of B12 deficiency

  1. Persistent fatigue or weakness — B12 deficiency can cause anemia and reduced oxygen delivery.

  2. Tingling or numbness — especially in the hands or feet; this can reflect nerve involvement.

  3. Balance or walking problems — nerve damage can affect coordination.

  4. Brain fog or difficulty concentrating — some people notice memory or thinking changes.

  5. A sore, red, or unusually smooth tongue — sometimes accompanied by mouth ulcers.

Risk is higher in people who have poor B12 absorption, including some older adults and people with pernicious anemia or certain gastrointestinal disorders. Long-term use of metformin or acid-suppressing medicines can also reduce B12 levels in some people. Strict vegans are at increased risk because naturally occurring B12 is found mainly in animal-derived foods.
