If you have a heart attack at home, do this in 10 seconds and you can save your life.(1 / 2)

That viral “10-second trick” is not a proven way to stop a heart attack. Don’t waste those first seconds trying to cough forcefully, drink something, or perform a special maneuver.

If you suspect a heart attack:

  1. Call your local emergency service immediately.
  2. Stop activity and sit or lie in a comfortable position.
  3. If you have prescribed nitroglycerin, use it exactly as directed.
  4. Aspirin may be appropriate for some people, but follow your emergency operator’s instructions because it isn’t safe for everyone.
  5. If the person becomes unresponsive and isn’t breathing normally, start CPR and use an AED if available.

Possible warning signs include chest pressure or pain, pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or unusual weakness.

Don’t wait to see whether it goes away. A suspected heart attack is an emergency.
