If Nighttime Leg Cramps Keep You Awake, Here’s What You Need to Know

Nighttime leg cramps can be sudden, painful muscle contractions that wake you from sleep, often affecting the calves, feet, or thighs. They may last a few seconds to several minutes, and the muscle can remain sore afterward.

The good news is that most occasional nighttime leg cramps are harmless, and a few simple steps can help relieve them and potentially reduce how often they occur.

What causes nighttime leg cramps?

Common contributing factors include:

  • Muscle fatigue: Long periods of standing, walking, or strenuous exercise.

  • Dehydration: Particularly after sweating heavily or during hot weather.

  • Pregnancy and aging: Both are associated with a higher likelihood of cramps.

  • Certain medications: Some medicines, including diuretics and certain cholesterol-lowering medicines, may be associated with cramps.

  • Underlying conditions: Nerve problems, diabetes, kidney disease, or circulation problems can sometimes contribute.

Often, however, no specific cause can be identified. Cramps do not automatically mean you have a vitamin or mineral deficiency.
