HOW TO REMOVE SET-IN GREASE STAINS FROM LAUNDRY

How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains From Laundry 👕✨

Set-in grease stains can be stubborn, but they’re often removable—especially if the garment hasn’t been repeatedly dried on high heat.

🧼 What you’ll need

  • Liquid dishwashing detergent (grease-cutting)
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Warm water
  • A soft toothbrush or clean cloth

Step-by-step

  1. Don’t put the garment in the dryer yet. Heat can make grease stains harder to remove.
  2. Place the dry garment on a clean towel.
  3. Apply a small amount of grease-cutting dish soap directly to the stain.
  4. Gently work it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
  5. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
  6. Rinse with the warmest water that’s safe for the fabric.
  7. Apply liquid laundry detergent to the area and wash according to the garment’s care label.
  8. Check the stain before drying. If it’s still visible, repeat the treatment rather than putting it in the dryer.

For really stubborn stains

For washable, colorfast clothing, you can let the dish soap sit a little longer and repeat the process. An oxygen-based laundry stain remover can also be useful if the garment’s care instructions allow it.

⚠️ Avoid these mistakes

  • Don’t use the dryer until the stain is gone.
  • Don’t scrub delicate fabrics aggressively.
  • Don’t use bleach unless the garment label specifically permits it.
  • Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other household cleaners.

For silk, wool, leather, or dry-clean-only garments, skip the DIY treatment and follow the care label or take the item to a professional cleaner.

Quick tip: The sooner you treat grease, the easier it usually is to remove. For an old stain, you may need 2–3 treatment cycles rather than a single application.
