How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method
Over time, jewelry can lose its sparkle because of dirt, oils, lotion, and everyday buildup. Fortunately, you can restore much of its shine at home with a gentle cleaning method.
What You’ll Need
A bowl of warm water
A few drops of mild dish soap
A soft-bristled toothbrush
A soft, lint-free cloth
Simple Cleaning Steps
Prepare the solution: Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
Soak the jewelry: Place suitable jewelry in the solution for about 5–10 minutes. Avoid soaking pieces with delicate stones, glued settings, pearls, or materials that can be damaged by water.
Gently brush: Use a soft toothbrush to carefully clean around settings, chains, and other hard-to-reach areas.
Rinse thoroughly: Rinse with clean, lukewarm water. For very small pieces, do this over a bowl rather than directly over an open drain.
Dry and polish: Pat the jewelry dry with a soft cloth, then gently buff it to bring back its shine.
Important: Different metals and gemstones require different care. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive toothpaste, and vigorous scrubbing, especially on plated jewelry or soft gemstones. When in doubt, check the manufacturer’s care instructions or have valuable pieces professionally cleaned.
