How Long Does a Watermelon Last Once You Have Cut It?

🍉 How Long Does a Watermelon Last Once You’ve Cut It?

Once you cut a watermelon, its shelf life becomes much shorter because the exposed flesh can pick up bacteria and moisture loss occurs more quickly.

In the refrigerator

Cut watermelon should generally be refrigerated within 2 hours of cutting and stored in a clean, airtight container or wrapped tightly.

Best quality: about 3–4 days
Keep your refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Keep cut watermelon away from raw meat, poultry, and seafood to prevent cross-contamination.
What about whole watermelon?

An uncut watermelon lasts considerably longer. Keep it in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to cut it. Once cut, refrigerate the remaining fruit promptly.

Can you freeze cut watermelon?

Yes. Remove the rind and seeds, cut the flesh into pieces, and freeze it in an airtight freezer bag or container. Frozen watermelon is best used in smoothies, frozen desserts, or drinks, because freezing makes the texture softer after thawing.

How can you tell if cut watermelon has gone bad?

Throw it away if you notice:

A sour or fermented smell
Slimy or unusually soft flesh
Mold
Discoloration that looks abnormal
A fizzy or fermented taste

And don’t taste food to determine whether it’s safe if it already looks or smells spoiled.

Bottom line: For the best safety and quality, eat refrigerated cut watermelon within 3–4 days. When in doubt, throw it out.
