Doctor Uncovers A Telltale Sign In Your Fingernails That May Predict Your Life Expectancy

That headline is misleading. No single fingernail feature can reliably predict an individual’s life expectancy.

Nails can sometimes provide clues about underlying health problems, though:

  • New dark or black streaks can occasionally be a sign of melanoma and should be evaluated, especially if the mark is changing.
  • Clubbing (enlarged fingertips and curved nails) can occur with certain lung, heart, or gastrointestinal diseases.
  • Spoon-shaped nails may be associated with iron deficiency.
  • Very pale or unusual nail color can sometimes accompany anemia or circulation/oxygen problems.
  • Brittle or ridged nails are common with aging and repeated trauma and usually aren’t a sign of shortened lifespan.

So the useful message isn’t “your nails predict how long you’ll live.” It’s “certain nail changes can be clues that deserve medical attention.”

If you have a new, changing dark streak, significant nail deformity, or unexplained changes affecting several nails, have a doctor or dermatologist examine them.
