Doctor Uncovers A Telltale Sign In Your Fingernails That May Predict Your Life Expectancy

Can your fingernails predict your life expectancy?

The headline “a telltale sign in your fingernails that may predict your life expectancy” is misleading. There is no single nail sign that can reliably tell you how long you will live.

However, fingernails can sometimes provide clues about underlying health problems.

Nail changes worth paying attention to

  • New dark streak under a nail: Often harmless, but a new or changing dark band can sometimes be melanoma of the nail unit and should be checked by a dermatologist.

  • Spoon-shaped nails: Nails that become thin and concave can be associated with iron deficiency, among other causes.

  • Clubbing: The fingertips become enlarged and nails curve more than usual. It can occur with certain lung, heart, gastrointestinal, or other diseases.

  • Horizontal grooves: Known as Beau’s lines, these can appear when nail growth is temporarily interrupted by significant illness, injury, nutritional problems, or other stresses.

  • Yellow, thickened or crumbly nails: Often caused by fungal infection, although several other conditions can produce similar changes.

What about the “life expectancy” claim?

Researchers sometimes find associations between physical characteristics and disease or mortality in particular populations. But an association is not a personal prediction. Your nails cannot provide an individual countdown or accurately determine your life expectancy.

Factors such as age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, cardiovascular health, physical activity, and other medical conditions are far more relevant to longevity.

When should you have a nail examined?

Arrange an evaluation if you notice a new or changing dark streak, unexplained clubbing, persistent discoloration, bleeding, pain, or a significant change affecting several nails.

Bottom line: Your nails can occasionally be a useful clue that something deserves medical attention, but they aren’t a reliable measure of how long you will live.
