Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

The kitchen item is **aluminum foil** (or plastic cling wrap) used to wrap the banana stems.

### Why It Works

Bananas naturally produce and release a high amount of **ethylene gas**, primarily through their stems (the crown). This plant hormone is responsible for speeding up the ripening and browning process.

When you keep bananas loose in a fruit bowl—especially alongside other fruits like apples, avocados, or tomatoes that also emit or react to ethylene—the gas circulates freely, causing the whole bunch to overripe and spoil rapidly.

Tightly wrapping the stems with **aluminum foil or plastic wrap** traps the gas and blocks it from escaping down into the fruit, significantly slowing down the ripening process and extending their shelf life by up to 10 days.

### Tips for Best Results:

* **Keep them intact:** Wrap the entire crown/stem area together as a single bunch rather than separating individual bananas first.
* **Isolate from other fruit:** Move them away from your main fruit bowl and keep them on a separate section of the kitchen counter.
* **Avoid paper:** Parchment paper doesn’t work well because it fails to create a tight enough seal to trap the escaping gas.
