Are You Urinating a Lot at Night? Here’s Why and What You Can Do About It

If you’re urinating frequently at night, especially two or more times per night, the medical term is nocturia. It’s common, but frequent nighttime urination can sometimes point to an underlying condition.

Common reasons

  • Drinking too much fluid in the evening, particularly tea, coffee, cola, or other caffeinated drinks.

  • Alcohol, which can increase urine production and disrupt sleep.

  • Diabetes — high blood sugar can cause increased thirst and urination.

  • Enlarged prostate in men, which can make it difficult to empty the bladder completely.

  • Overactive bladder or urinary-tract problems.

  • Certain medications, especially diuretics (“water pills”).

  • Leg swelling or heart/kidney problems — fluid that accumulates in the legs during the day can return to the bloodstream when lying down, increasing urine production at night.

  • Sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, can also be associated with nocturia.

Things you can try

  • Reduce fluids for 2–4 hours before bedtime, while still drinking adequately during the day.

  • Avoid or reduce caffeine and alcohol in the evening.

  • Empty your bladder immediately before going to bed.

  • If your legs swell, elevating your legs during the afternoon/evening may help.

  • Keep a bladder diary for several days: record what and when you drink, when you urinate, approximate amounts, and how many times you wake at night.

  • If you take a diuretic, don’t change its timing yourself; ask your clinician whether the timing could be adjusted
