Can an Early Sign of Alzheimer’s Disease Appear While Taking a Shower?
Some changes in everyday activities can be noticed in people developing Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. However, there is no single shower habit that can diagnose Alzheimer’s.
Changes to Watch For
1. Forgetting the Steps
A person may suddenly have difficulty remembering the usual sequence of bathing, washing, or getting dressed.
2. Trouble Using Familiar Items
They may struggle to recognize or correctly use familiar products such as shampoo, soap, or a towel.
3. Losing Interest in Personal Hygiene
Someone who previously maintained a regular routine may begin bathing much less often or need repeated reminders.
4. Difficulty With Familiar Tasks
Problems completing everyday activities that were once automatic can sometimes be an early sign of cognitive decline.
Remember
Occasional forgetfulness is common, especially with aging, and does not automatically mean Alzheimer’s disease. Stress, depression, medication side effects, sleep problems, and other medical conditions can also affect memory and daily functioning.
If you notice persistent or worsening changes in memory, thinking, personality, or the ability to manage everyday tasks, encourage the person to speak with a healthcare professional.
Bottom line: Difficulty with familiar bathing routines can be a clue to cognitive changes, but it is not a standalone test for Alzheimer’s. A proper medical evaluation is needed to determine the cause.
