If You’re Over 60, Eating a Banana a Day Causes… What, Exactly?
The claim that “a banana a day causes problems after 60” is misleading. Age alone doesn’t make bananas dangerous. For most healthy adults, bananas are a nutritious source of potassium, fiber, and other nutrients.
❤️ What bananas can actually do
Potassium helps your heart, muscles, nerves, and kidneys function properly. Getting adequate potassium through food is generally beneficial for healthy people with normal kidney function.
⚠️ The important exception: kidney disease
People with advanced chronic kidney disease may have difficulty removing potassium from their blood. In that situation, eating large amounts of high-potassium foods—including bananas—may need to be limited.
Certain medicines can also raise potassium levels, including ACE inhibitors and potassium-sparing diuretics, so your individual situation matters.
🍌 So should someone over 60 avoid bananas?
No—not simply because they’re over 60. Kidney function does tend to decline with age, but that doesn’t mean everyone over 60 needs a low-potassium diet.
