If you mean the classic simple, budget-friendly “church dinner” style chicken, here’s an easy three-ingredient version.
Oven-Baked Three-Ingredient Church Dinner Chicken
Serves: 4–6
Prep: 5 minutes
Bake: about 45–60 minutes
Ingredients
2–3 lb (900 g–1.4 kg) chicken thighs or drumsticks
1 packet dry onion soup mix
1 cup chicken broth
Instructions
Heat oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C).
Arrange chicken: Place the chicken pieces in a lightly greased baking dish.
Add seasoning: Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly over the chicken.
Add broth: Pour the chicken broth around the chicken, avoiding washing the seasoning off the top.
Bake: Cover tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–30 minutes, until the chicken is browned and reaches 165°F (74°C) internally.
Rest: Let it stand for about 5 minutes before serving.
The result is tender, savory chicken with plenty of flavorful pan juices—great with mashed potatoes, rice, green beans, or rolls.
Note: onion soup mix can be quite salty, so don’t add extra salt unless you’ve tasted the finished sauce.
