One vitamin that opens blood vessels and improves circulation

One Vitamin That Opens Blood Vessels and Improves Circulation” — What’s the Truth?

The vitamin most often behind this claim is niacin (vitamin B3). Niacin can cause temporary widening of small blood vessels, which produces the familiar flushing, warmth, tingling, or itching sensation. But that doesn’t mean taking niacin will fix poor circulation.

⚠️ Don’t take high-dose niacin just for circulation

High-dose niacin can cause unpleasant flushing and, at higher amounts or with prolonged use, potentially serious side effects. It should be used therapeutically only with appropriate medical supervision.

For people with peripheral artery disease (PAD), current guidelines emphasize proven treatments such as structured exercise, smoking cessation, management of cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes, and appropriate cardiovascular medications—not vitamin supplements as a way to open blocked arteries.

In fact, the 2024 PAD guideline specifically states that B-complex vitamin supplementation to lower homocysteine does not prevent major cardiovascular events in people with PAD.

🥗 Where should you get vitamin B3?

Niacin is naturally found in foods including poultry, fish, meat, nuts, legumes, and fortified grains. Most people can obtain adequate amounts through a balanced diet.
