🤧 Constant Phlegm in Your Throat? Here Are Some Possible Reasons

Feeling like you constantly have mucus or need to clear your throat is common, but it can have several causes. It isn’t always an infection.

Common causes
Postnasal drip: Mucus from the nose or sinuses drains into the throat, often from allergies, a cold, or sinus irritation.
Acid reflux or GERD: Stomach contents reaching the throat can cause throat clearing, hoarseness, a lump sensation, or excess mucus—sometimes without classic heartburn.
Allergies: Exposure to pollen, dust mites, mold, or pets can increase nasal mucus.
Dry air or dehydration: These can make normal mucus feel thicker and more noticeable.
Smoking or vaping: Irritants can increase mucus production and throat irritation.
Chronic sinus problems: Ongoing congestion or inflammation can produce persistent drainage.
Asthma or other airway conditions: These can sometimes cause chronic cough and mucus.
What you can try

Stay adequately hydrated, avoid cigarette smoke and vaping, and consider saline nasal rinsing if nasal congestion or drainage is involved. If reflux seems likely, avoid large meals close to bedtime and identify foods that trigger your symptoms.

Don’t automatically assume that persistent mucus means you need antibiotics.

🩺 When to get checked

If phlegm or throat clearing lasts more than a few weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, difficulty swallowing, significant hoarseness, wheezing, or breathing problems, arrange a medical evaluation.

Coughing up blood, severe difficulty breathing, or significant chest pain requires urgent medical attention.
