🛏️ How to Whiten Yellowed Mattresses and Pillows Without Bleach
Yellowing is common and is often caused by sweat, body oils, moisture, and age. You can improve the appearance without chlorine bleach, but a mattress itself should never be soaked, because trapped moisture can encourage mold.
For pillows
For washable pillows:
Check the care label first.
Wash according to the manufacturer’s instructions, preferably with warm water if permitted.
Use your normal laundry detergent plus oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) if the label allows it. Oxygen bleach is different from chlorine bleach.
Run an extra rinse to remove detergent residue.
Dry the pillow completely before using it. A damp pillow can develop odors or microbial growth.
For yellowed white pillowcases and protectors, oxygen bleach can also be effective when fabric-safe.
For a yellowed mattress
Don’t pour cleaning solution directly over the mattress. Instead:
Vacuum thoroughly to remove dust and debris.

Lightly dampen a clean cloth or upholstery brush—don’t saturate the mattress.
