If Your Feet Swell, What Could It Mean?

Swollen feet or ankles (edema) are common and aren’t a clear sign of one particular disease. The cause can range from something harmless to a condition that needs medical attention.

Common causes include:

Standing or sitting for long periods
Hot weather
High salt intake
Certain medications, including some blood-pressure medicines such as amlodipine
Venous insufficiency, where blood doesn’t return efficiently from the legs
Heart, kidney, or liver problems, which can cause fluid to accumulate
Injury or inflammation
🚨 Pay attention to sudden swelling

Seek urgent medical attention if one leg suddenly becomes swollen, painful, warm, or red, particularly if the change is unexplained. This can be a sign of a deep-vein thrombosis (DVT).

Call emergency services if swelling is accompanied by sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood, severe dizziness, or fainting, because a clot may have traveled to the lungs.

If both feet or ankles remain swollen for several days, especially with breathlessness, rapid weight gain, or reduced ability to exercise, arrange a medical evaluation.

Bottom line: Foot swelling is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Persistent or unexplained swelling deserves attention rather than being attributed automatically to “poor circulation.”
