10 Warning Signs of Breast Cancer You Shouldn’t Ignore
Breast cancer often has no symptoms in its earliest stages, which is why recommended screening is important. And while most breast changes are not cancer, a new or unusual change should be evaluated rather than ignored.
1. A new lump in the breast
A new lump or firm area in the breast should be checked by a healthcare professional.
2. A lump or swelling in the armpit
Breast cancer can sometimes involve lymph nodes under the arm, producing a new lump or thickened area.
3. A change in breast size or shape
Noticeable changes in the size, contour, or shape of one breast deserve attention.
4. Skin dimpling or puckering
Skin that develops indentations, puckering, or an unusual texture can be a warning sign.
5. Red, swollen, or unusually warm breast
Redness, swelling, or warmth can have many causes, including infection, but persistent or unexplained changes should be evaluated.
6. Nipple turning inward
A newly inverted or flattened nipple can be an important change to report.
7. Unusual nipple discharge
Discharge that isn’t breast milk—particularly bloody discharge—should be assessed.
8. Changes in the nipple or surrounding skin
Persistent scaling, crusting, itching, thickening, or redness around the nipple can sometimes occur with a rare form of breast cancer called Paget disease.
9. Persistent breast pain
Breast pain is not usually caused by breast cancer, and many benign conditions can cause it. But persistent or unexplained pain should still be discussed with a clinician.
10. Unexplained thickening or swelling
A section of the breast may feel thicker, firmer, or swollen—even when there’s no distinct lump.
